A celebration of color

The idea behind the project is to see how an artist creates his or her own style of work using only a color as the theme. The artist is encouraged to create work that fits into their current body of work with the only stipulation being that it relates heavily to the color selected.

The end result will be an exhibition where we explore the relationship of color in the artists work, as well as the relationship that the color has to other works from artists around the world. We will also be making a four part book featuring each of the pieces that we get back and organized by the colors in which they were inspired.

After you sign up to participate in the project, you can start immediately. You can find all of the instructions below. We will not be mailing out additional instructions with this particular project.

The Book

We will be creating a four part book featuring each piece that is submitted and organized by the color that it represents. The book will be available in The Brooklyn Art Library!

Every piece submitted will be included in the book.

Project overview

After you sign up to participate in the project, start creating your artwork. We will not be mailing you anything extra for it. Simply follow these rules.

The Exhibition and book

There will be an exhibition in Brooklyn at Brooklyn Art Library on May 14th, 2010. Your work will be included in this exhibition and will also be published in a book documenting the project.

Where to mail your completed color project:

Art House Co-op
C/o The Color Project
201 Richards St. #16
Brooklyn, NY 11231

Please note that we do not jury entries. We believe art should be accessible to the masses and we therefore included every entry submitted.

Art work/Paper Size/ Materials

  • Your work MUST be able to fit inside of a 9x12 inch manilla envelope. We WILL NOT accept anything larger.
  • Your work must be 2d.
  • The work can not be thicker then 2 inches.
  • You are free to use any material you want.

Please write your full name and email address on the back of your piece.

Mailing your work to us:

  • Please postmark your work by April 14th, 2010
  • If you want your work back, please see below.
  • Please do not send something that requires us to be there or requires signature. If you do, we will do our best to receive the package, however we are not responsible for packages sent back to sender if we are not there.
  • We try to check in work as fast as possible. However it is a long process especially close to the deadline. Even though your submission does not say we received it, it does not mean we didn't. We will check in everything at least one week prior to the exhibition date.

If you want your work returned

If you want to receive your work back, you must include a check/money order/cash covering the cost to send your work back in a regular 9x12 inch manilla envelope. We are NO LONGER accepting SASEs. If you do not send a check/money order/cash, your work will become a part of the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Art Library and will periodically be on display! If your check/money order/cash does not cover the cost of the package, we will alert you of what the extra cost needed is and will not send it back until we receive the remainder.

PLEASE ALLOW UP TO 4 MONTHS AFTER THE FINAL DATE OF THE EXHIBITION TO GET YOUR WORK BACK. We will do our best to make it quicker, but again, there are a lot of you and not many of us!

Can I pick my work up after an exhibition

We will have a "pick up" day where you can come and pick up your work if you live in the area. This date will be announced closer to the exhibition.

Your name on your work

Remember back in kindergarten when you had to write your name on the back of everything you made? The same rules apply here. We will not accept any work that does not have your name written on the back. (We do understand this might not be possible in some circumstances and will look past it, but do your best to label it.) Plus, don't you want credit for your work?

Work sold

If your work is for sale and is sold during an exhibition, please allow up to 90 days to receive a check from Art House. Please include the price of your work on the back of your piece. Please write NFS if it is not for sale. If you do not put a price on the back, we will assume it is not for sale. Please remember the gallery commission is 40%.

Images on the site

All the images in artists profile and the project photos section are uploaded by the artist. Art House does not and can not upload or take photos of your work. If you want to upload your own images make sure you take photos before you mail it off. If you need help with this we would be happy to help if you send us an email!

Lost/stolen/other unforeseen stuff

Art House does everything we can to keep your artwork in great un-lost condition. However stuff happens. Unfortunately we can not replace your artwork and are not responsible for lost, stolen, dropped in bin of water, ripped, destroyed, or anything else of that nature, artwork. We will try to make it better with what we can do, but again, we are not responsible.

Copyright rules

Your work is your work. We will never ever sell your physical work without your permission or not give you your share. We will however use your work in promotional materials, web ads, print ads and the like. We will also from time to time publish your work in an art house book. We reserve all copyright ownership to the books published. Each project will specifically state if the artwork will be sold or not at the exhibitions.

Emailing

We will always do our best to respond to your email in a timely manner. However, remember if you have a question 100 other people are probably emailing the same question. Please read through our FAQ's, the project rules and the general rules before emailing us. We can not respond to all emails. At times especially around deadline times emails can be overlooked. We apologize and ask that you are patient with us. Most answers can be found on this website somewhere!

Hours of operation

Currently we are only open by appointment. Please email us if you want to come see an exhibition while it is up. We can not extend the dates for any reason.

We will be posting the Brooklyn Art Library hours when it opens in February.

Exhibition Photos

Exhibition photos can always be found on our flickr page at http://www.flickr.com/arthousecoop/ within one week of an exhibition.

By submitting artwork to Art House, LLC, you are giving Art House, LLC the right to use images of your work for any promotional materials, on our websites, and any other print publications we put out. Newspapers and other media outlets (including online blogs) are allowed to use images of your work in promotional material promoting Art House.

Your work is your work and you retain the rights to it. We simply want to be able to show it off. Also, please remember that in order to return artwork to you after the project, make sure to follow the instructions in the rules.
